Yep, I paused for a second to consider if 5 would be better, but partner has to have other values outside , and if they have a heart stop, 3N is our destination. I don't think pass is right, and I open a lot of garbage...

Wouldn't 3H suggest a half stopper here? It would for me. so I am bidding 3S. I cannot have a S suit, so there should be no ambiguity here.

I agree, but I think 3 suggests playing someplace other than 3N, probably 5. If I was completely confident that partner would bid 3N with a heart stopper now, I'd bid 3, but I don't think that it should be still looking for 3N.

I think pass is pretty clear actually. Bidding 3H is asking for a lot, if we have 1 heart and 4 diamonds then game is usually bad or hopeless, and if we have 1 heart and 5 diamonds we are still not out of the woods, we still need partner to have the club ace or 3 spade tricks on a heart lead.

By the way if we are actually w/r as opposed to w/w, then I think bidding 3H is even worse, since RHO is more likely to have values (namely a minor ace).

24 HCP game with 2 hands that might be balanced and without a stopper in their suit is very hard to acomplish if you don't have a fit in a major.

Agree with Roger that pass is clear.

I think pass is obvious too. This occurred in the game I direct. Save the no-play NV games for IMPs please.

A strong player who hires a pro asked me what I'd bid. At the table he bid 3 and his partner bid 4. He thought he could then pull back with 4 which he thought could be passed, but instead he was hoping for some magical combo across and tried 5. Partner had something like xx QJ AJxxx AQxx.

Perhaps the most amazing thing wasn't that he thought game could make but rather if he cued 3, but that his partner would pass 4 (after 4), but his partner agreed !?

Thanks

What is 2 here ? 4 card raise to 3+? (I'm used to a 4 card 1, still bid 2 inverted with this type of hand, weak no trump setup)

The dangerous hands are where partner has 3 bare aces and 5 diamonds in a weak no trump, or (xx, Kx) either way round, Axxxx, AQxx.

Pass is clear especially if partner could have bid 2NT with a 12-14 Balanced hand with a stopper on the previous round.

I invited with 3 and partner decline - end of story.

Edit: whoops i meant 2 not 3
