Definitely 1♥, there is no way this is passing out, and I am sickened by the thought of partner thinking we have anything on defense.

I like Fred's rule:

don't open 2♣ if later on in the auction (any auction) you will want to bid 6 over 6 because you aren't sure that opponents go down.

I apologise in advance for a sloppy paraphrasis, but I think I will listen to it and I will only bid 1♥
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

reminds me a hand where I once had to overcall 2M over 2 clubs and then double to show I was the guy with the real 2♣ opener hehe.

Easy 1H. Even though it has the tricks for 2C, I like to keep my 2C openers tight (ie partner has a very good idea of what i have as soon as i rebid).

I like Han's rule:

If you can never show your strength after opening at the 1-level, and you won't have rebid problems after opening 2C, open 2C.

I open 2C.

1H is sensible, 2C is not wise when you have no idea is you can beat an opps slam (in 3 suits even). Just because you open at the one level does not mean you do not have a good hand. If you are afraid of what to do later thats unfortunate.

Well, good, I'm glad there is a mixed view on this. I opened 1H at the table.

If you open 1H, the auction proceeds:
1H-1S;
?

If you open 2C, the auction proceeds (I think... there may be a 4C call over 2D depending on how wild opps are. If so, then what?):
2C-2D (neg/waiting);
3H-4C;
?

I'd like to bid 5♣ over 1♠, hopefully I can find out the necessary info then get out in hearts... Probably not possible though, and will lead to a misunderstanding/bad contract, so now comes the ugly rebid problem...

I think I would choose a jump-shift into 3♦, which I play as GF. If partner raises or does something else that we don't like, we can always fall back on some number of hearts. I wanted to bid 3♣, but that loses ERKC in clubs when partner rebids 3♠...

This is a bit of a contrived auction, but I think it will get us the info we need.

If I had opened 2♣, I'd bid 4♦ now...

What you say definitely has validity the problem is that at the same time you will never convince your partner you have this much offensive power and defense will not be a problem until they get to 5♠ or higher. So the 2♣ call alerts partner that you have this much offensive power and will help him decide to go on to six with say the K♠ and the A♦

Partner will bid 3S over 3D.

I wasn't sure if 5C was ERKC here. In any case, I splintered 4C, hoping to keycard in spades, and partner punted 6S. Maybe I should pass here, but continued 7H-7S. -150 not so good opposite a cold 6H.
