In the old days, you'd open 1 and rebid 6. I imagine more scientific bidding these days. :-)

I was anxious about having a 1 bid passed and went via 2C which was difficult
Partner had a positive club response and I found it difficult to fully explore
Ended in 6NT, not the best when there was a possible grand in hearts

That made me laugh. The Culbertson era. I would still open 1 here instead of 2 for the simple reason the hand is distributional and it not likely you will left to play there, and, more importantly, you have mentioned one of your suits at a low level. The last thing you would want to do is bidding one of them at the five level, assuming the opps. have pre-emptive in or when you open 2.

Edit: The vulnerability and hand position has just been added as I write, or I am having a senior moment :(

With the opps. quiet I prefer a 2 opening. A ideal hand for Kokish 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 3 showing both suits.

1H did appear to be the top bid chosen

I am always anxious about pass out at 1 level but maybe not with this many points - unlikely I guess

Always hearts first, not diamonds?

I hate to say the vulnerability, hand position and all other details have not changed since the original post

Always , 1 then 's would show longer diamonds than hearts. I want to be able to show this 6 bagger, if needed.

This is a really bad hand to start with 2. I would always open this 1. Kokish would show this hand nicely but the chance that one of the three opponents will disturb our masterfully crafted auction is tremendous.

The key word is anticipation.

True, an undisturbed auction might let you express your shape (or at least 55) nicely.

But it not unlikely that your 2nd bid might be at the 5-level.

Starting with 1H and make forcing bids repeating D ad nauseam will help partner judge better.

Starting with 2C and tossing a coin on which suit you bury when the bidding gets you back at 4S (absent some unusual NT bids or forcing passes, that are probably too advanced notions for beginners) is not as pleasant, right?

There is virtually no chance the bidding dies at 1H pass pass pass.

4NT for specific Ace/king ask if you have that (which we dont)
if 2-(2S)-X*/P-(4S)-4NT is not natural (and it cant be), 2C is fine... I guess?
*X=double negative
If you bid 1H-(2S)-?-(4S), you have the bid 5D but what difference does it have?
if the contract is not (or rarely) contested, than it doesnt make any big difference
Maybe the auction will go:
1H-(1S)-1NT-(2S)-3D(should be forcing if good-bad 2nt is a thing)-(4S)-P-P
Then maybe you can bid 4NT, showing shape (and slam intrest?)

2-(2)-X/P/2NT/3-(4); 4NT*-(5)-X-(P); ?. Your call?

P.S.: Forcing pass was on here, so double just says partner does not have faith in the 6-level.

Oh no, this hand is becoming too stressful for a beginner like me. Do I think my partner has A/K?
if partner had responded 2nt (promises honor and sopport for all suits, at least for us, which is not possible because I have AKQ in diamonds so my partner must have bid a balanced 8-10 pointers and thought thats what it shows), 6H. On a bad day, he would have both K and A, but I dont have enough space to look for them.
if 3C, 6D/6H (I forgot the hand; is the heart suit self sufficient?)
if P/X, than I'll pass after the disencouraging double. On a bad day the opponents will make 5SX+1 (by ruffing everything) or we have 6D/H.

Here is the hand

Lucky to make 6NT - not totally happy with how we got there - I risked the finesse immediately - maybe more advanced players can do it without that - I think you need the finesse
(please don't obsess over the robot bidding - other Bridge software managed an orderly process to 6H)

Many made 6H or 6H+1
One gambled on the grand

I was just anxious about 1H being passed but etc
