I debated for ages (with myself) between 1,3 and 4 and ended up being in the majority on 4S

What do you reckon the best bid is? MPs

NO. One opp has passed and you have the top suit ♠, a opening hand and a easy rebid. Open 1 ♠

I would not pre-empt here, but for a different reason - too much defence (or at least unexpected defence). When the opponents bid over, partner will misguess what to do - and even if it's -50 into +50, that's a problem.

I don't like 1♠ - like the other thread, partner will game force with hands that have no hope - but I'll do it, and apologize when we lose two trumps and two tricks in 4♠ (and hope that RKC stops me in a making 5 when partner has the even stronger hand). I also am concerned that my defence is poor - yes, the same defence I said was too much for a preempt - and I'll feel uncomfortable when partner doubles 3♥ or 4♥, but again, what if I pull a penalty double to a minus score?

But the big question - here and in the other thread - is "what does your partner expect from a pre-empt"? Not what I do, or David, or...

Rule of 20 suggests 1♠
I prefer 2/3 honours for 4♠

I agree with 1S, whatever partner expects from 4S in first seat.
I'm less certain about my rebid after a game forcing 2C (may be fit) however, particularly if 2S can be 5 cards.

If you bid 1S you don't get the best result or 4 for that matter - but we were the majority EDIT - a few even passed and ended up at 4 anyway

I totally failed using my 234 rule I think anyway given that it appears to have 7-8 tricks + 3 = 10-11 Close

I think Mr Pavlicek's hand evaluator gave that a K-R of something above 13

As for my partner it? would usually expect 8+ spades and 5-9 pts. It? has a tendency to preempt with strong suits sometimes. I know it is not a classic preempt because of the other honors

Too good for a pre-empt and the offense:defence ratio is sub-optimal, I open 1♠. The fact that it doesn't end up as well as opening a pre-empt is irrelevant. Bridge is a game of probabilities and there is often a chance the best action gets a poor result and vice versa. If bridge was a game of perfect justice I suspect few would play it.

I'm suprised that no one wants to bid 3♠.
4♠ promises a 8 card suit or a AKQ 7 card suit that is too weak to open 4♦ (Namyats) for me.
At first/second seat, I would open 3♠ with 2/3 honors with maximum a side A
1♠ with 3Ks and a Jack is just too much for me
So I would pass.

Not sure it would or even should make with a normal hearts split, the spades are pretty poor and partner did not promise help.

My stomach rejects unilateral auctions, but I would still have more faith in the following:
