Are there any modern ideas for what a 5-Major opening should show.

Different than 11 tricks missing a top trump honour which never happens.

I realize the alternatives are unlikely to be very frequent.

I don't think so, since it's quite a useless bid. I've never seen a 5M opening, and if you don't give it a really precise meaning, you'll miss slams or bid slams you can't make.

Not Vul versus Vul, you might want to save 5 for super preempt. If you have the monster hand with just losers in hearts, you can open 2 and then rebid 5 as your oppoeents are unlukely to be trying to save over your 2 bid at super high level, so the jump will be clear.

At vul versus non-vul, you will want to use it as ther tradicitional meaning, as it is highly unlikley you will be wanting to preempt to the five level in a so far uncontested auction. and it is more likley your opponents will be wanting to preempt against your 2C opening bid.

At equal vul, you need to decide which way is best. Pure preemptive or pure slam try. For easy of memeory, I prefer 5<M = weak not vul (more frequent), vul = pure slam try (look for tricks in major).

I think a 5 opening at for example none vuln. could look like this:

Too many tricks for 4, too few defence for 4, and 6 is pushing it as well.

For me, the one time I opened it was in a Goulash tournament, holding a 10 card suit I decided that 4H wasn't enough. Anyway, bidding went like this:

5H 6D P 7D
all pass

and it went one off.

What would you open with 9-solid?

Normal preempt :-)
I think I open 5M about once a year.
The last one was:

QJTxxxxx, J, xxxx, J
I rememeber the two singleton jacks
pass-pass-5s they played 6c made 7, I'll never know if opening 4s would have let them reach 7, probably not but who knows?

non vulnerable vs vul I held today

KQJ109xxxx
10x
10
10

Apart form the defending values of all those 10s... I probably should had opened at the 5 level, since I bid 5 anyway alter when they bid 5 (wich would made 13 tricks unless I found an inspired lead).

A premptive 5H is needed much more then 5S, there are many hands that you would feel bad if you open 4H and the opponents outbid you with 4S and you will have to take the last guess.

5 I would expect

Everything sitting in , if partner has 2 aces, he is to bid it up to 6, with 3 aces, 7 because he knows I will have a wild hand with a definite solid suit.

Can someone point me to these other threads.

I couldn't find them.

Thanks
