Just taking a little survey to see how different people handle a very common situation....
Let's see what is and is not "Standard".
Please assume that 2♥ bid is natural.
In addition, if your answer is that you play penalty-oriented doubles over opp's overcall, what do people do with competitive or invitational + hands with 4-card spade suits that don't also qualify for a penalty double?
intro Bridge 101?
Apologies, probably should have added an "other" option....
Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Yeah you got it, other... Dbl is always penalty in my partnership.
To show weak, invitational and GF hands, we use a combination of Rubensohl and Lebensohl.

I see many top experts playing negative double against
2 level overcall.

I play double as stolen bid, with suit bids being transfers.
Not elegant or optimal, but we don't forget it

in that sequence i play x for penalties... there are plenty of other ways to bid both invitational and game forcing hands, but only one way to double for penalty

My junior partner and I have given this some thought and came up with:
Penalties if WE are vulnerable, negative if we are not vulnerable.
If this agreement is too dodgy, I would suggest:
Penalty if your 1NT is weak, take out if your 1NT is strong.
The idea about being V or NV has this rationale: If you play negative doubles, opener must also keep the auction open and this can be dangerous. If vuln. this might give you some expensive results..
For example we had:
1NT* (2H) p (p)
dbl** (p) ?
* 14 - 16
** negative
Now I held 3433 with 1 scattered Jack, partner of course held 3244... Anyway all were vulnerable and there I was in 2S with them holding more trumps and more HCP than us.

What you say about alleviating opener from the possible need to reopen vulnerable makes sense, especially at imps or imp pairs. This is really a matchpoint issue to some extent. If doubles are penalty, what methods, assuming playing lebs and/or rubensohl, do we have to seek a spade or minor suit fit without creating a GF?
Thanks: DHL

Other: always negative, whatever the range is.
I can't believe people play penalty doubles at matchpoints over 1NT-2H, at IMPs it is less clear to me.
As for "stolen bid doubles", ... (still thinking about a friendly way to say it

Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
