IMO pass = 10 ; 3 = 9 ; 3 = 8 ; Dbl = 7 ; 2NT = 6

Err isn't 2N 15-17 bal or similar for most people by an unpassed hand.

I can't drum up too much enthusiasm to bid here and double seems designed to give us a negative score. And if I had to bid a minor then I really prefer clubs since partner will often double with the red suits, but our chances of going for -200 just seem so high when I cannot show both sensibly..

Yes it is. But, I want it to mean what I want it to mean when I have this hand

Because we're in the passout seat, maybe 2NT would be better off being a 2-suited hand rather than 15-17 balanced with Spade stoppers. Not saying that it is the optimal way to play it, but it would be nice to have someone do some simulations to find out.

A sim for something like that would be very difficult to use. Frequency of occurence is only part of the issue. We would have to factor in the additional burden the balancing double would be taking on, and the ability to survive it.

I guess most people didn't realise that 6 points is very low on the nige1 scale. ;)

At first look the yes or no vote confused me. Yes I want to protect my side, pass hits the mark for me in that area.
