Everyone opened 1NT except at our table .
Our opp ( North ) missed a Q and opened 1D .
This led to a 6D contract ... making 13 tricks :

1D - 3S! ( splinter )
4C - 6D

Practically everyone else was in 3NT making 12 or 13 tricks .

My preferred NT response structure has 3♥ and 3♠ as 3=1=45 and 1=3=45 respectively, looking for slam. I would have expected to see something like:
1N-3♠
4♦- 4♠
4N - 5♥
6♦
Having a mistake land them in an impregnable slam when the field can't get there is definitely unlucky.

I'd be disappointed in all the souths not for not trying to find a slam. I like SteveMoe's method (though 1 partner likes to bid the 3 card major to show 1345/3145)

Surely the south hand is worth an invite to slam in a minor?

I know partner has the perfect hand, 3 small opposite our stiff Ace but if you have no way of resolving these hands when you open 1NT and receive no interference, then your methods need looking at.

I think the stiff ace is the worst card for the 1345 convention.
But reaching the diamond slam is not too difficult anyway.

I would not open 1NT either.

1♣ = 15+ nat/bal or 18+ any
... - 1♠ = no 4M, GF
2♦ = 15-17 bal, no 5M
... - 2♥ = minor suit ask (4-3, 4-4, 5-3, 5-4 minors)
2♠ = no 5m, not (23)44
... - 2NT = 4m?
3♦ = 4 diamonds
... - 4♣ = asking bid agreeing diamonds
4♦ = club control
... - 4♥ = RKCB
4NT = 0 or 3
... - 5♣ = Q ask
6♣ = ♦Q, no side king, something extra
... - 6♦

After a 1NT opening, Puppet allows you to check for fits in all 3 possible suits in exactly the same way as the convention Steve describes via the sequence: 1NT - 2♣; 2♦ (no 5M) - 3♠ (5 diamonds, 4 clubs). Even playing SA I cannot see why South does not simply Stayman and bid diamonds. That should reach 6♦ comfortably on this hand. It would be tougher if the fit were in clubs. All in all, very unlucky.

We play weak no trump, so auction would go

1♦(4+)-2♦(inverted not GF, may contain 4M)
2N(GF usually balanced)-3♣
3♥(stop)-3♠
4♣-4♥(KB)
4♠(0/3)-4N(Q♦?)
5N(yes but no side K)-6♦

Playing our no trump methods, we start 1N-2♠(weak one minor or at least mild slam try both)-3♣(4+♦)-3♥-4♣ and the same finish as above.

This reminds me of a board that cost me dearly. We came 4th in one of the big national pairs competitions, close up behind the second pair, with a pair of Egyptians a mile out front. This mattered as the top home pair got an international selection. Somebody opened 1N (12-14), partner bid 6N, and as dummy's balanced 17 count hit the deck, he muttered "sorry partner miscounted my points". Anyway 3 finesses and 2 3-3 breaks later, we signed for no matchpoints.

Well hopefully you've got 31 other boards for them to do things like that rather than 1.
