So: we play (1X)-2X = top two suits. We had this auction:

(1S)-2S*-P-4D
P-5C**

* = I alerted as H & D
**= here's the question: Am I constrained to take this call as a control, implying S control? or can I pass, concluding pard has forgotten?

I think I know what Bobby Wolff would say....

Unless partner gave away something when you explained it as hearts and diamonds, you have no UI and can do what you like. However, your partner has UI from your explanation, and if he has misbid, holding hearts and clubs, you may get an adverse score adjustment on that basis, unless there is no logical alternative to 5, which seems unlikely.

Do you have any unauthorized information? From just this description I would say you do not - although obviously your partner's manner when you explained the call may affect this. If you do not have any UI, you are not constrained to do anything.

OTOH, your partner definitely _does_ have UI, so you may discover that his bidding will be rolled back by the director at the end of the hand. (which is not to say that he _can't_ bid 5C there, if 4D would be pass-or-correct in the system he thinks you're playing then it's likely he can)

So, did Blackshoe type faster, or did he start sooner?

I agree with the others. You can do what you like, but partner's action mey be challenged. The director will have to somehow decide whether 4 would be pass or correct if you were playing methods other than the ones you actually agreed.

His answer is a little shorter, so they could have started about the same time and typed at the same rate.

Yes you can pass, as others have said.

If you now remember that partner has forgotten before, or you remember other partnership experience that suggests that partner might have other than what you explained, then that is a disclosable partnership understanding. You should call the TD and explain that your previous explanation of 2 was an accurate description of your partnership agreement but was an incomplete description of your partnership understanding (or something less pompous sounding:)).
