Opening 4 here is silly. Your hand is good and RHO is a passed hand, so you are quite likely to have the majority of the values. The colors are not good for opponents to sacrifice, so you aren't really that afraid of their possible spade bids. Your heart suit is not good enough to be sure that you belong in that strain, and you don't have enough playing strength for the four-level really either.

It might be different in third chair, and if I had a seventh heart I would certainly want to open 4 (my offensive strength would be a trick more and the odds that hearts is our best strain would go up substantially too).

I'd assume the perp needed to gain 45 imps in eight boards.

Opening 4 is random. Lots of ways to see that it can work, but many more ways to see that it won't.

Interesting contrast with the xx xx AQT9xxx xx 2nd seat opener.

Actually unanimity is much more than the posted replies imo. Me for rexample dont have anything more to add than those who replied already.

I think you should find yourself a better partner, or less lucky opponents.

lol thanks for the vote of confidence. it was an opp and they did score a bit of a goal with it. i'm not so hostile to the idea as everyone else though. as phil says there are a lot of ways to win, although it's my style to open 4M more than most people anyway.

Open 4H and miss 6H as partner knows
you don't have 2xA plus a void.

This is often the case. Posters believe the answer is so obvious, they don't bother. However, in this case the idea of 4H seems to be so repugnant that we all want to weigh in anyway.

The person who bid 4 on THAT deserves to hit partner with KQJxx --- QJTx AKxx and go down a bunch.

If I want to do something off beat, I'd rather pass than open 4. I don't expect a pass out.
