Why did south double? surely from the 3nt bid he knows that his clubs are probably worthless, how many tricks does he expect to take in 5d?

Might even be a reason to quietly pass 4♥ (though at the table I think I'd double)

In my world, defensive beers never care about trumps... The reason "trumps don't count" is that it's too easy to make the beer in 2♦, say, on a 9-card fit.

My favourite (near-bridge) story was a crazy bridge night. The contract was some number of diamonds, and the rule on the hand was "second-highest card played to the trick wins the trick". On the last trick, I underruffed declarer's ♦8 with my ♦7 to set and win the beer (which, given that the game was in the bar, was immediately paid).
