East certainly played the spots off the cards. Instead of a redoubled overtrick, he went down.

Given the quality of the auction, I'm really not surprised he misplayed so badly. :)

It wouldn't count for me, are trumps :-(

If you were my partner I'd still buy you one though!

Why did south double? surely from the 3nt bid he knows that his clubs are probably worthless, how many tricks does he expect to take in 5d?

Might even be a reason to quietly pass 4 (though at the table I think I'd double)

In my world, defensive beers never care about trumps... The reason "trumps don't count" is that it's too easy to make the beer in 2, say, on a 9-card fit.

My favourite (near-bridge) story was a crazy bridge night. The contract was some number of diamonds, and the rule on the hand was "second-highest card played to the trick wins the trick". On the last trick, I underruffed declarer's 8 with my 7 to set and win the beer (which, given that the game was in the bar, was immediately paid).
