See today's bulletin:
USBF2009news9.pdf

usbf bulletin said:

A Committee: Rose Meltzer, Chairman, David Berkowitz and George Jacobs, met to substantiate the fact that three players broke the smoking rule ...
A fine of $250 per players was imposed to the USBF no later than July 15, 2009. In addition, each player will lose up to 12 Positioning Points earned during the year toward use in the next USBF Open Team Trials.
Further, the Committee recommends establishing these penalties for 2nd and 3rd offenses.
2nd offense - $1,000 fine and a one day suspension from the Event.
3rd offense – a one year suspension from the USBF.

$250 = nothing
12 Positioning Points = ouch!

Do you know what the "smoking policy" is?
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Yes. The event is hosted at a hotel. The hotel has rules ( presumably dictated by local law).

The rule at the hotel is "No smoking in the hotel" and smokers have to exit the premises before lighting up. Thats a flight of stairs and 10 yards out the door.

Ah, so it is not a clothing rule as could perhaps be presumed?

In some / many events the players are more or less mandatory to have representative clothes - thus in practice - in USA smoking for the men, it Sweden they would escape with a decent suit...

If you are going to smoke, at least have the decency to look good.

IMHO, smokers should follow the rules --rule makers should take accommodation of smokers into consideration -- and non smokers should keep their personal judgements to themselves.

Do smokers keep the smoke they exhale to themselves? It seems an equally fair standard.

Yes, don't ever criticize the spreading of second-hand smoke which has been proven to be more lethal than inhaled smoke itself. However, I do sympathize with those trying to beat what is acknowledged to be the worst addiction.

second-hand smoke is not a "personal judgement", and I, as a smoker, agree that inside smoking, where this could be a factor, should be banned. Given that, reasonable access to an outside location should be afforded whenever possible.

We smokers should follow the rules, whether or not this occurs.

Don't you have a nose? That's how I know when they're coming.

I also have a throat -- that's even more sensitive to smoke, at least mine is.

how feasible is it from forbidding an opponent from going on a smoking break, just so you don't have to deal with inhaling all the crap that gets stuck in their clothes?

You could offer the opp a stick of nicotine gum, that might tide him over.

I don't smoke myself, but it seems too easy to jump on the anti-smoking bandwagon. I think if you give reasonable accommodation to the smokers, then it's a non-issue. I don't really understand such draconian measures against the smokers myself. I believe there should be some punishment, like fining some IMPs or something, but I think it's a bit harsh to punish people for their addiction. It's not like they are taking a banned substance!

i somewhat disagree -- unless they shower and change their clothes after smoking, they are hurting me.
