Scoring: MP

1,1,1N,3!

OK, I've made this error more than once. As soon as the bot opens 1D I'm thinking slam, but I blew it. The bot passed my 3D.

What should I have bid. 2S instead of 1S? 4N right away? In the actual sequence, 1D, 1S, 1N, what's the best way to proceed.

Hi,

A matter of agreement, I would guess, that for most 3D
is just inv., showing something like 5-4 with 10-11HCP.

To set up a forcing seq. you have to go via 2C, search
the net / the forum / your books for NMF.
2C followed by a diamond raise, sets diamonds as trumps
and creates a game forcing seq.
That being said, I am not sure, that it is a good idea to
insist on slam after partner showed a balance 12-14 count,
... ok you have a 9 card fit in diamonds, but what else,
what if partner happens to have wastage in hearts?

Your first aim should be to find out, if 5D is better than 3NT,
if you found out that 5D is better, you may consider checking,
if 6D is worth bidding.

With kind regards
Marlowe

The easiest way to look for a diamond slam is to bid a 3 splinter straight away. Of course this pretty much gives up on finding a fit, but if you don't have methods to force over 1 1 1NT, you have to give up something!

You need some method to make forcing bid after partner rebids 1NT, either check back stayman, new minor forcing or XY-NT.

I prefer the latter. In my preferred version a jump to 3 over 1NT shows 55 and a GF. With this hand I'd rebid 2, a conventional GF and support diamonds next.
Kind regards,
Harald

This post belongs to B/I forum. I have taught my students in one of the first lessons that there a 3 types of calls:

-Non Forcing: has 2 goals - looking for the best partscore and keeps bidding alive if partner has extra force if he didn't limit his hand yet. Examples, last call is NF: 1-2, 1-1-1-1NT
-invitational - invites partner to bid game if has has maximum values for his previous bid(s). Examples: 1-1-1NT-2NT, 1-1-1NT-3, 1-3

-forcing - you have to use a special mechanism that generates a forcing situation. For example NMF (new minor forcing) or 4SF (fourth suit forcing) or Check Back Stayman. The main ideea is to make an artificial call that creates a forcing situation, afterwards you and your partner start describing your hands looking for the best game/slam. Example:
1-1
1NT-2 !! -artficial bidding mechanism, generating forcing (NMF here)
2(descriptive call)-3 - forcing now because it was preceeed by the NMF.
Ideea for B/I: any bidding sequence that doesn't use forcing mecanism (NMF/4SF) is maximum invitational and NMF/4SF creates GF

Thanks to all. I strongly considered 2D directly, but decided I wanted to show my spades. I was playing new minor forcing, but obviously, I overlooked the call. Am a bit rusty not having played for half a dozen years. Thanks for the feedback.

What is XY-NT?

What is XY-NT?

XY-NT is a very useful, and ordinarily very simple convention after the bidding has started 1x-1y-1NT.

2 is then a puppet to 2 (opener is obliged to rebid 2), whereafter responder might pass (when he wants to play 2) or make a natural invite.

Thus, 1-1-1NT-2-2-2 is invitational with a 5-card suit, whereas 2 directly over 1NT is to play.

2 over 1NT is a conventional GF.

There's several ways to play 2NT and higher bids. I prefer to use 2NT as a puppet to 3, either as a sign off or some specific GF hand types. And use all jumps as natural and GF.

You can develop this method to allow you to define a lot of hand types.
Kind regards,
Harald

The bots play new minor forcing, so you should bid 2 over 1NT. The bot will bid something and then you bid 3 at your third turn. This shows a game forcing diamond raise.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

I agree.

1) 4 may be the best contract
2) 3 immeadiately if Invitational with 4 and 5; 10-11 points.
3) Why are you looking at slam?!?! Game will often go down! Qx Kxxx Axxx Kxx is a real challenge... Find the best game, and be happy.

I agree with skaeran. x-y-z is a great convention. If you add one more relay bid - 2 NT as transfer to 3 clubs you can also handle weak but distribuional hands.
Anyone here playing this version?
