I think partner has a penalty double of 1. So 3 is tempting. Maybe 1 was a psych?

A bit of table feel might help, but I'll go with my gut and bid 3. At least if it's wrong, it's going to be horribly wrong!

Agree with that.

I gave this to my other half whose first comment was 'delightful'

He eventually bid 3H, although I half-convinced him that 2NT might be better - 2NT (scramble) works opposite 1345 and 1453 but loses opposite 1444.

I really hope partner would bid 2NT the second time with 1345.

It doesn't "work" opposite 1453, it breaks even. Meanwhile how about 1534...

Maybe I've been persuaded back into 3H.

But I'm still not convinced partner would bid 2NT with a 1345. Actually I'm not sure I can construct a 1345 that passes over 1H but is still prepared to double 2S.

Well, the full deal may not meet with everyone's approval but it was late in a bad day :P

Partner held A 76xx AKJx KQxx

LHO had opened 3rd chair on Jxx AQxx xx Jxxx and dealer held Kxxxx K Qxxxx Ax

I chose 3 and was relieved not to hear double
