Watching coverage of the Shenzhen Lanpu Cup pair final last night, I noticed something I'd seen before and had forgotten: when the round changes and a new pair comes to the table, the operator enters the new pair names so they appear on the screen, but the movie display of previous hands has the pairs who played the previous rounds overwritten with the new pair names.

And it seems that in .lin file saved to my disk there is no pair information at all! How difficult is it to make the record reflect what we saw as we watched it? For anyone like me who goes back over results from time to time, it would be very nice. And there are portions of the BBO server system that handle recording pairs for each hand played. Do others care? Where does this idea fit in the scheme of things?

With BBO 5.0 and its raft of improvements, obviously that just makes us pay more attention and see more things that could be improved! Ah, the sad life of a successful programmer!

Fred is in Hawaii for the ACBL Fall Nationals and will likely not be able to reply until he is back in a couple of weeks, but I know that he is aware of this and that it is on his "to-do-list".

We have been debating the issue before, and as far as I recall it's not a trivial thing to programme. I know for a fact that you won't see a change in the new release.

The same problem will arise in the upcoming Reisinger B-a-M from Honolulu the weekend after this I'm afraid. In the past we haven't had many pairs events on vugraph, but we are getting still more, so I suspect that the topic will be rather high up on Fred's list.

Let me guess that something will be done some time in 2007, but no promises.

The recommended work-around is to start a new vugraph presentation each round.

A moderate amount of additional preparation is required, principally splitting up the hand data files into a separate file for each round. Splitting a 28 board file into seven separate file would take about 15 minutes inclusive of checking each file back to the original.

It is also recommended that the event name be abbreviated to something short given that the operator will need to type it several times during each session.
Disclaimer: The above post may be a half-baked sarcastic rant intended to stimulate discussion and it does not necessarily coincide with my own views on this topic.
I bidding the suit below the suit I'm actually showing not to be described as a "transfer" for the benefit of people unfamiliar with the concept of a transfer

As Roland has said, this topic has been raised before and Fred is well aware of it. Even the big Pairs event, like the Cavendish and the recent World Pairs from Verona, are not recorded properly with the pair names. Hopefully Fred will see a way to bring this higher up his "to do" list in 2007
