You are playing Acol, but you might have a similar problem in other systems

We play inverted minors 9+ with 5 or 10+ with 4, may contain 4M.

Partner has no 4M and has one of the following hands:

3334/3343 5-9
(23)44 5-9
(233)5 5-9
Any hand with 6+ clubs 3-9, the shorter the diamonds, the less they can have
2245 5-8

He will not ever have 5 diamonds

Hi,

I am assuming he denies a 4 card major, this means, they have a 9 card spade fit.

If you bid 2C, you are bound to find a fit with p, he should correct back to diamonds
with equal minor length, ..., with 4 clubs and 3 diamonds he may pass, but you will
ruff with the shortage. You may end up in a 43 on the 3 level, but it wont happen very
often.

So 2C, maybe we awoke the sleeping dogs. That is the real downside.

With kind regards

2, a fun quirk of bidding minor suits. Partner will pull with 3 diamonds and pass otherwise (note that pass therefore implies at least 5 clubs - at most 3 spades, 3 hearts, 2 diamonds). With at least 3=5 in the minors partner has the luxury to choose.
Note that the opponents have a 9(+)-card spade fit, so with our known 8(+)-card minor suit fit we should LAWfully compete to 3m (and they should then likely compete to 3). Direct jump bids are strong though, so we have to let the opponents in first.

I am used to open 1D with 44 in the minors, regardless of suit quality,
so I am a bit hesitant to claim p has to pull with 3 diamonds, or that pass
showes 5+ clubs.

So am I, but that hand would not rebid a second suit.

I bid 2, the auction proceeded (X)-3-(3) and now 2 meta agreements get in each others' way.

Once we've agreed a fit, doubles are for penalties

Where 3 suits have been bid, X doesn't show extra values but shows 4 cards in the unbid suit.

I probably wrongly doubled, partner bid 5.

He put down Jxx, xx, Qxx, KQxxx and with the aid of the diamond finesse this rolled. +100 for 3-2 would have been just above average, +300 would have also been all the matchpoints. 2 pairs sold out to 2=, it should only make 7 tricks, but that would have been really good for them anyway.

4 cards in the unbid suit should only apply when we can have a fit there.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket
