Now it would be interesting to show a 5+ with forcing values, or in some way check if opener has a 3-card support, but the bids shows the following

2=Retreat from NT
2=5+ and 4+, forcing to 3N
2=Retreat from NT
2=4+, 5+, forcing to 3N
2N=4, 11-12 HCP
3=5+, 4+
3=2-suited bar bid, 6+, 4
3=6+, invitational
3=Same as 2 :-)
3N=4+, 17- HCP

the 2 is strange and 3 just looks odd, but it seems that I should either show 5+ or 4+.

Lets try with 2 as opener has denied 4

That got us to the normal 4

2 used to be new minor forcing as you'd expect. Must have introduced a buggy rule about cue-bidding an opponent's suit that got a higher priority.

Yes, I think it is a fine rule that a direct cuebid is showing support, but never after a bid in a new suit. Then a cuebid should be asking for more information, probably with focus on stoppers

restricting 2 to hands with 5+ clubs is just a poor use for the bid.
Sure with 5 clubs and gameforce the right bid is 2
but you have no bid for the much more common 5 invite

Surely 2 is the call and with 5+ GF you bid 2 then 3
Sarcasm is a state of mind

Yes there is a hole in the system.

You can bid 2 with this hand, partner has denied spades so won't raise. But with an invitational hand with five hearts you have a problem (regardless of whether you have four spades or not).
