Ignore this. I'm trying to post a hand.

I would have bid the same, I expect, and 3NT doesn't look like a great contract, though I'm sure others can advise on the merits of advancing with 4 spades or whether either player could have upgraded a bit more.

Hi,
Thanks for getting this to appear. We talked about it afterwards and nothing indicated to either of us that either one of us had enough points to bid higher.

As North I would have shown the (either directly or via 1NT)

South can then show support either directly via 2 if the1 overcall was the minimum partnership agreement or via 2 to show a stronger hand.

North can now revalue their hand and likely count 5 tricks. A game try via 2NT will result in 3 and North can then place the contract

4 and 3N are not great contracts, they happen to make with the fortunate lie of the cards.

You do need to find the 4-4 spade fit though, much prefer 1 to 1N

I play 1S by N as forcing, 4+, not denying H support, 8+.

S has an easy raise (lacks a few things to cue), and N with AQ in overcaller’s suit is quite happy and could try for game at IMPs (because the rest of the hand is not that exciting), that S would accept.

A bad game that makes when picking tight J vs Q and 3 very small.

So it is not a big deal to stay out of game for OP, but playing at NTs rather than the 44 S fit means things can be improved.

Not denying 3+ H support from a passed hand is too much for me, but I agree it should be forcing 4+ and is appropriate here.

Had forgotten the initial pass! Yeah, if you have fit, 4S and a max pass, just CB and a partner who wants to play higher than 2H will introduce S that you can raise, should they be 45 in Majors.

Hi,

1NT is ok, the alternative option would be 2C, you dont have 3 card support,
but if partner has min, you dont mind playing 2H.
And the 4th 9 can be sold as a stopper, but it is not ideal.
The advantage of 2C is, that it showes a max. passed hand, 1NT could be less.

Given you are a passed hand, partner with a min opener will sign of in 2H.

Obviously, if you happen to play 1S as promising 4+ and forcing, than this would
be ok as well. But than again you only will end up playing a spade partial.
North is a passed hand, South has a min opener, min opener vs. (at best) inv. hands
should stay low.

With kind regards
Marlowe
