Clicking on the Green + to "Vote" for a Post fails with a message that I have reach the maximum votes I am allowed for the day. I am signed into the BBF and I have not voted for anything else - in fact this is the first post I have read today!

you have to post regularly on the forums to be able to do this. think feature kicks in once you have posted 50 times. maybe more.

On the other hand, the "vote post down" symbol is purely aspirational. So if you need therapy click it as often as you want - nothing happens.

Rarely, you will find some people with the "vote post up" feature disabled.

Then why show it to people who can't vote?

It's like masterpoints, Tom. At first, you can't get any even though they look like they're available.
Later you start to get some.
Shortly afterwards you stop worrying and play in the Free tournaments.

Ask the writers of the forum software. Note that that is definitely not anyone working at BBO.

... so people who waste others time by posting dozens of meaningless, non-helpful comments are given the ability to vote other comments up/down, but people who refrain from wasting others time unless they can contribute meaningful information that resolves or at least advances a topic, are blocked? BRILLIANT!

Note: this is likely to get you thrown off rather than allowed anything.

The reason there is a limit of posts before being allowed perks (see StackExchange for a major powerup of ths) is because the forums want people to have an idea how the community works before coming in and totally blowing things up (when we had downvoting, that was particularly bad. But "random upvotes from an untrusted source" also damages things.)

Note that BBO also uses this tactic - need a certain number of logins to host team games is the one I remember, but there are others.

The other issue is "create forum user just to go upvote" (either entire threads, or sockpuppet upvotes).

If you have an issue with "people writing dozens of meaningless, non-helpful comments" - report them.
