There is an argument for jumping directly to 6H, hoping to increase the penalty when the opps take the push to 7 clubs or diamonds. But my bid is a simple 5H.

I am fine with 5. 6 would be potty with two empty(ish) doubletons.

My next choice is double which could easily be right but ODR too good for that imo.

I'd double

I rank
  • 5 = NAT. The pre-empt forces us to gamble.
  • Double = PEN. Might be a better choice if you knew what to lead.
  • Pass = NAT. Timid.
  • 6 = NAT. Brave bluff.

5 just looks sensible. Double is too ambiguous. Pass is scary cat. Anything else is not showing world-class opponents the respect they deserve. You're semi-balanced with 6322 and two worthless doubletons, but there's a good chance partner can turn up with either a honour or a singleton in one of the minors and trumps to ruff a loser for -300 at the most. At this level it's a guessing game so I was told it's always best to bid what's in your hand. So 5 it is.

Why has responder not supported clubs? I'll try X. Nige1, I'd lead the SA.

edit: this is where MrAce tells us they were playing transfer pre-empts :)

It's well know that LoTT falls down with these high level decisions.

I like 5H because it has a few ways to win over double:

- It makes
- It is a good save
- They push on to 6m and go off

Double only really wins when they are not making 5D and we are not making 5M. I accept this is more likely than any of the above which is why it's close but I still think it's best.

I would bid 5. There is the additional chance of getting away with it when you're technically wrong because the opening leader doesn't have a diamond.

double.

I'm sure it's something weird to be posted as a problem but diving with these cards (potentially -500), really?

And not diving in risks only getting +200 vs +650/680 (QJxxx, xxxx, x, Axx or similar)

There is no perfect solution

Kantar wrote a funny article about a number of similar hands where every time he was given them as a lead problem he would pick the A (3 of those cashed) instead of the obvious spade on the theory of "why are they asking?"

Double

If the decision were at the 4 level, 4 would be logical.

But without any distribution in "their" suits, I find it hard to make a 5 level call. There's just no way to know what's in partner's hand and too much chance of a crossruff between the opponents in their suits.

double. partner's pretty unlikely to bid and it might well be cold but such is life. if you don't x you're just going to get robbed on most hands.

Is anyone else concerned about double with 2-2 in the minors, suggesting good splits? I'm not sure who is sacrificing but I'm inclined to think it is us.

This is also what I think.
I also believe, it may be hard for them to double us because I have the AKQJT of my suit and they bid due to their shape and very long suits and not due to strength. After all you may have a void in one of their suits and spades running (according to the what they expect you to hold)

That's why I chose 5H.
