Good match mlbridge, it was fun. Ended up mbodell +47 net.

Final score mbodell 122 - mlbridge 75.

(first two quarters already reported)
Q1 mbodell 26 (26) mlbridge 1 (1) +25 net in quarter, +25 net overall. Hands http://webutil.bridg...14876&u=Mbodell
Q2 mbodell 14 (40) mlbridge 24 (25) -10 net in quarter, +15 net overall. Hands http://webutil.bridg...00471&u=Mbodell
Q3 mbodell 37 (77) mlbridge 29 (54) +8 net in quarter, +23 net overall. Hands http://webutil.bridg...00191&u=Mbodell
Q4 mbodell 45 (122) mlbridge 21 (75) +24 net in quarter, +47 net overall. Hands http://webutil.bridg...40590&u=Mbodell

The most interesting boards were likely the third quarter, where the most combined imps were scored, especially the second half of that quarter where for that part of the match GIB EW had a winning card.

Thanks for the game.

Was flying home, so I played the fourth set while in airport and on plane. :)

Most interesting board for me was board 5 of the 4th set:

I had a chance to easily make as the double should require me to finesse the 10 after winning with K

I think this format is really bad. IMPs is not a good choice, since GIB is unable to bid reasonably. And if you combine IMPs with non-best hand, then you are constantly playing boring partscores for washes. At least playing MPs, you can make a difference on every board in your cardplay and playing best hand IMPs, you get a lot of games so more boards are interesting.

Why would best hand make more games? It doesn't change the total points in the partnership, it just puts the biggest hand south. What it does mean is that when there's a game, it's usually by NS rather than EW, unless the game is based on extreme distribution.

I don't mind it. Sometimes best-hand feels like cheating, since it gives such a big clue about the HCP distributions during the bidding and play. It's nice trying to have real auctions where partner can be strong, too.

It does, since GIB is a timid bidder and he virtually always has a maximum for his bidding. So if you have the best hand at the table and partner is max for his bidding you will play more games.

That's not my experience, GIB frequently jumps to game with hands I would have invited with. The most common is 1-1NT-2-4 -- usually this is 11 HCP and 5 hearts, which is fine, but I've frequently seem him do it with only 4. Or 1-1NT-2-4 -- this should be a limit raise with 3-card support, but he sometimes does it with just 2.

Anyway, it's hard to please everyone, which is why we change formats for each event. But I think in most of the threads where we've discussed formats, the concensus has been that best hand is an adulturated form of bridge.

I think the main problem with non-best hand is that GIB is awful at constructive bidding with good hands if there is competition. Hence it is percentage to make wild overcalls with very weak hands, which also leads to random results.
