4D has to be some non-minimum hand that doesn't want to play 3NT. If you don't play splinters, I presume it's distributional with short hearts. If you play splinters, it's tough to come up with a hand opposite your hand that would want to do that. Maybe 2-2-7-2? That's tough to buy; why aren't the opponent's bidding their 10-card spade fit?
Anyway, I would bid 5D if you play splinters (expecting two heart losers because partner didn't splinter) and 6D (or 4NT) if you don't (expecting no wastage in hearts and perhaps my singleton spade is good as well.)

hi mr roth-stone,
4D is setting trumps and demanding a cuebid. you're maximum in terms of HCP and very suitable. cuebid spades and hope that's enough for partner to partner to bid blackwood.

Perhaps by defining what partner did not bid will help uncover his intent. I would assume 3D as competitive, 5D as to play, and a number of other suit bids and cue bids that could have a variety of strong meanings - but what about the simple invitational-strength hand? How do you make that bid in a competitive auction?
That's what I would assume and I would raise to 5D on the strength of the singleton spade.

Well...I really do not care whether 4♦ was an invitation as you say or whether it was demanding a cue as Wank says
Why do I not care? Because I am coming from pass, I can not possibly have anything more than this so I cue 4♠. What you said could be a problem if I had a hand that would not accept an invitation.
Fwiw, I would have started 3♠ over 1♦ previous round.

Truthfully, I forgot this hand initially passed as I don't use inverted minors after a pass, though maybe I should. I like 3S as a passed hand bid.
