While there are some people who are upset about the East Wing itself, I think most of us are more upset about how this happened. There have, of course, been previous renovations to the White House, but they all went through proper review processes, with buy-in by Congress and historic preservation organizations. They weren't just unilateral actions by the President. It's symbolic of how Trump treats the entire goverment and country -- he feels he can do whatever he wants. Not to mention that when he first announce it he promised it wouldn't affect the existing structure of the East Wing.
Remember when he promised to bring down prices and end the Ukraine War on day 1? While it may be understandable why those were hard promises to keep, this one should have been trivial -- just don't do it if the East Wing needs to be demolished.
I live in Massachusetts, where we have many buildings, including private homes, that have historic significance. The owners can hardly install a new light fixture without getting approval from the town's Historical Commission.
