4s is cold

ok 5c is only 500 but still better than 3d + 1 lol

how could we have bid it better?

Prefer something other than 3D with North at his second call, he has a (very nearly) GF opposite 2NT imo. Not sure what though - maybe X, or maybe just a simple 3S.

Over East's 2 rebid what would double mean? I think it shows a 4 card spades suit and tolerance for diamonds. You could argue that South initially passed with say an unbalanced hand with hearts and therefore over 2 a double is for penalties. But playing it this way is usually ineffective. So South should double. There again after South bids 2NT, North is easily strong enough to bid 3 showing his shape.
