So in a strong club context we get this bidding:

1-1
2-2
2NT-3

Meaning:

1 (precision)-1 (natural)
2 (minors, could be 4-5)-2 (4th suit game forcing)
2NT (spade stopper)-3 (natural forcing)

What do you think the typical hands for 3, 3, 3, 3NT, 4... should be?

In these types of auction I play step 1= you bid my 4 card minor. Others = you bid my 5 card minor.

3: Good diamonds, eg Kxx x AQJxx Kxxx
3: My first thought was that this shows Hx and suggests that hearts should be trumps, but all the examples I came up with looked like 1NT rebids. Maybe this should be a cue-bid
3: "FSF", unsure whether to play 3NT or clubs, eg QJx x KJxx AJxxx
3NT: Suggestion to play there, eg AQx x KJxxx Jxxx
4: Agreeing clubs, eg Kxx x AQxx Kxxxx
4: Agreeing clubs, cue-bid, eg Kxx x AKxx Kxxxx
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

3 = stuffed in the minors. Spade stop is like Axx or Kxx.
3 = dunno.. makes little sense as natural. Maybe weary of heart stop?
3 = I was joking a bit about that stop... I actually have just a half-stop (Qxx, Jxx, etc.)
3NT = good spade stop.
4 = brilliant hand in context. Probably like Axx in spades and singleton heart.

IMHO when it seems impossible for opener to have heart support
(given the bidding) a hand that has not been able to limit its
power should sneak in a 3h* bid (or whatever bid is appropriate
given the auction) to show a min and use other bids to show hands
near the top of given range. This is easier in a precision type
auction since the opening bid is much more limited.

3d longer dia than clubs
3h* see above someone needs to start limiting their hand
3s longer or equal clubs than diamonds
3n nothing special to report but should be close to top of range (else 3h)
4c superb playing hand near top (spade ace) (singleton could be A or K in hearts)
and longer clubs than dia or equal
4d same as above but longer dia than clubs
4h spade A (maybe singleton) At worst honor x in hearts boring minors
sigh too tired to go on

note that over the 3h minimum showing bid responder can bid 3s asking for
more information so the above direct responses are all hands near top or
consist of 3 aces (control rich)

3 -good
3 - Hx (Ax Qx Kxxxx Qxxx). It makes a difference if this would be a 1N rebid or how often you raise on 3. If you always rebid 1N with Hx Hx 54 and with 31(54) I dont think I will ever bid 3
3 good question - probably not great spade stopper.
3N double stop
4 great hand for slam in s partner should cuebid except when he is dead min.

East is worth a raise of 3nt to 4 imo

I think West should raise 3 to 4 bid. He's been asked what he thinks of playing in clubs, and he ought to be delighted by the suggestion.

I agree that after 3NT East is worth 4NT. The minor-suit honours and top cards in the majors are ideal for slam. After 4NT West should drive to slam, perhaps investigating 7 on the way - Axx Axxx Kx AQxx is a good grand slam.

It's close but I think the west hand is worth 3 to pattern out instead of 2nt with all those filler cards. Easy road to 6nt after that but east should raise to 4nt anyway.

Easts pass is a pretty bad assessment of wests declarer play.

Doesn 2NT suggest 31(54) anyway?

In my partnership (by agreement) it suggests 2-2-(54). We avoid notrump bids with stiffs like the plague unless stuck with a stiff high honour.
