Landy is your defence to NT (my p's choice which I agreed to)

It's matchpoints

I know my own choice but P did something else just wanna check what people think

I bid 2C and don't consider it that close.

edit: This is to give you a sense of my conviction about the correctness of the response, not to make you feel bad for asking!

balancing position at MP, at favorable? The 5th spade is a bonus, not a requirement. 2

good luck to find you don't play in 2s but other.....anyway....

I can see everyone says bid. I JUST FIND this hand typical and difficult. I seem to guess wrong often.

If you made this into a simulation, my guess is that competing with 2would be a winner about 75% of the time. Only a guess mind you. If vulnerable at matchpoints my guess is that it would be a winner about 50% of the time.(perhaps a bit more) However, when you do lose you are likely to get the -200 "kiss of death".

Anybody done a simulation like this?

Thanks guys, my p chose to bid 2 on this hand... I asked him why, if he was going to overcall, he didn't use Landy. He said that he thought it should be 5/5 distrubtion. Imo the reason to overcall on this is that there are 2 possible spots to play, if his hand was say AT854 J97 42 Q82 I would never be overcalling.

There are reasons for bidding 2.

1) North may have a 7 count, but opponents are not even inviting game, so South (you) must have a pretty good hand. So North bidding something is an OK idea. However, you must be aware that his values may be light, and do not attempt to look for game.

2) If he bid 2, you bid your longer major, and if you have a 2344 shape you will bid hearts. Do you really want to play a contract on a 4-3 fit? A 5-2 fit is better, and because of this I as North would bid 2. If you had equal length and would bid 2 over , then he would bid 2 anyway.

3) If you end up in defence when opener bids his long diamonds over a 2, North certainly does not want you to lead away from your heart honour, assuming the Landy bidder must have one. On the contrary, North would welcome a spade lead.

No, with 2344 you will bid 2 because a 5-2 fit is better.

Landy certainly doesn't promise 5/5, your p needs to understand this. The whole point of using 2 to show both majors is that it gives partner the option of asking for the longer suit by bidding 2. If you want to restrict the interference over 1NT to 5/5 shapes it would be much better to use 2 instead of 2.

I don't play Landy, but would think this is dangerous. Partner may bid spades when he is 55xx if that is his better suit.

Well partner should not do that. And anyway even if he sometimes does that, it's not such a common occurrence. You should assume he is 5-4 as that is far, far more likely.

I think 2 is best. The upside of being able to bid on a hand this weak is that you often get the par score of 2M. The downside comes when both you and partner have approximately 12/13 points, and he daren't play you for a hand that strong, and you daren't play him for one, so you score +170 instead of +300/+400 (defending 1NT) or +600/+620 (declaring 3NT/4M) - but those hands are difficult against a Weak NT whatever system you play.
