pass

tempted to bid 2d and x but see no strong hurry
my AK AK make game by the opps unlikely and
since they are in the middle of a live auction why
not see where it is headed first. We have a hand
that easily allows us to back in if the bidding shows
it is reasonable to do so. P inability to bid over 1c
removes a lot of optimism about the future of this
hand.

Didn't I read in the obit for Marshall Miles that he liked to bid chuncky 4 card suits? This might be the type of hand he would overcall 2.

I don't know if I could bring myself to bid 2 at the table. But passing with AK AK in the reds is too much for me, so I double.

I am pretty sure, he prefers a major for this kind of stuff.

A spinoff from this, I presume.

I am curious, also...to see how badly my double works out.

I was sorely tempted to double but then it dawned on me that: A) partner could not bid over 1C, B) AK, AK works on defense, too, and C) I would have to mislead partner about my shape to get into the auction, the auction is forcing, so even if I pass now I will have another chance later.

Pass for now.

I would normally pass with this general flavor of a hand and re-open with double of say, 1nt but if they bid 2 back to me I'm stuck with a nasty guess.

So I double now where pard is not obliged to go past the 2 level but can with a shapely (and likely) minimum.

I think everyone would double.

I don't think that means that if you would double with this hand you should answer in the poll that you would double with 2344, maybe I'm wrong but obviously this hand is exceptional given its purity and max HCP. I would also open 1H with x AKQJ JTxxx xxx but I don't say that I play 4 card majors.

Well the way Csaba phrased the other poll you were supposed to click 2344 if there exist some hands with 2344 and at most 16 hcp that would double.

Anyway, as long as everyone doubles with this hand, I believe in mankind :)

Unfortunately, 50% voted pass :(

Was a majority of Pass when I voted. I don't normally reply to bridge stuff but this one really made me wonder.

Where I live everyone plays 1NT on this position as weak take out, and obviouly that agreement makes double much more atractive, I have little experience with natural 1NT.

When I voted Double, I was thinking of partner if we defend. On lead vs a NT contract, for instance, she will know my approximate strength anyway, if I have passed.

But she might conclude from my silence that a spade through dummy will be a good idea. It won't be.
