We're playing that the lead of the ace (suit contracts here) asks for attitude about the queen but the lead of the king asks whether partner wants a shift (the Obvious Shift idea). Leading the ace tends to imply the king while leading the king tends to imply a more solid holding (AKQ or KQJ, etc).

This means that partner (after the lead of the ace) has to discourage with xx and may consequently not get his ruff.

Is this a good treatment?

I should be more specific. We like the ability to lead either the ace or the king (asking for different things), but you're saying that if the ace asks for attitude that partner should encourage with either the Q or a small doubleton, right?

Correct. There are some well known situations like dummy has Jxxx, in which case you should discourage with Qxx, or Qxxx where dummys biggest spot is bigger than your biggest spot, but generally you encourage with either the queen or a doubleton.
