On hand 1 partner opted for 2NT which worked amazingly well as I happened to have a five-card minor and we preempted them out of a good game. I was wondering how much of that was coincidental, since we could've ended up in a 4-3 fit at the 3 level, which isn't amazing. The 1NT suggested is a perfect solution, thanks.
Hand 2 I bid 3♦ due to favourable vulnerability and spade shortness and all that, and it continued negative X on my left, pass pass pass. LHO (the doubler) had KJT43♦ and partner had a void, so we went -800 when they had no game. I was wondering if it was bad luck or bad judgment. Seeing as 3♦ is okay, should p or I tried to find a better spot than 3♦X?
Generally when you preempt white/red you won't be happy if they double you there, because their holding in your suit will be quite strong. Such is life, it is not that common that they saw you off and when they don't you've robbed them of bidding space. At other vulnerabilities I would be more cautious and bid 2D, because they have to beat me 1 less if they do have game, and it's less likely we have a good save that will only be found with 3D.
