EW have both done very well on trick1 , but still failed on trick 5...
Should East have solved the problem on trick 5 ?
Could West help somehow?

Are you sure declarer has played low ♣ at Trick 3?


Assuming yes think impossible to play anything other than spade ace at trick 5.


But this can be set .West at trick 3 simply has to play ♣8 not the ace:)

Once ♣8 wins cash ♣ace .East signals something in ♠. The west continues ♠. Now we know defense is easy when declarer shows out.

If declarer has played ♣ 9 at trick 3 i dont think it is possible to set this unless I can see all 4 hands:)

By the way on ♦ lead this might go down since declarer has to make a right guess in ♣

Of course declarer played ♣9 from dummy trick 3 , so West had to win the Ace.
I fixed the diagram.

I don't think I would get this right at the table, in case west had 4 clubs, his ♣8 indicates that he doesn't have anything in diamonds, maybe one of those positions where a lower "singleton" could have made it. Or reverse suit preference .

Partner opted for 2♠, at the table I would always assume he's more likelly to hold 3 spades than 4 since he didn't bid 3♠, and I don't remeber ever getting into deep enough thought to think that he would then be 4333 and would never bid 3.

This looks like a textbook prism signals hand (Round Prism) -- Tough to find the defense, I doubt I'd find it at the table.

But you need the trumps to play suit preference here, partner doesn't know you have the ♣A.
