How many players in North America have really colorful nicknames?
"The Beast" is an obvious example. I suppose that MeckWell counts (though appreviating the names of two members of a long lived partnership lacks imagination)
Off hand, I can think of quite a few British players with (relatively) well known nicknames.
Seems kinda weird.
In a similar vein, UK teams often seem to have creative names (Badger being an obvious example) Here, they just seem to name themselves after the Captain...

I'm sure they're disappointed right now.
But they've done extremely well and won a bronze medal (no play-off).
Great effort, Frances - congratulations!!

Losing the semi by 4 imps still hurts, even though we played pretty badly in that match.
As for the team name, when you enter you are asked for what your team name is. I suggest that many teams have very 'dull' names because they are sponsored, and the team is named after the sponsor. We are all amateurs, and could call ourselves what we liked. 'Badger' has a long and personal history.

I wonder if the guys from my old garage band ever learned how to play bridge... lost touch with all of them. I think a bridge team called "Savage Sausage" could really spark a renewed fever for the game.
