Meaning of 4M?

Is it really necessary to play 4M in the sequence:
2N - 3♣ - 3♦ - 4M?
to show a 6-4?
Would you even want to bid stayman in a lot of these cases? Even if you did, can't you use smolen?
I have a use in mind for 4M here, but I wanted to see how strongly people felt about it being a 'natural' call.

Yes, 64. Going through smolen and later showing 64 would be a slam try with 64, this one is just to play.
Yes you would want to bid stayman with somewhere between many to most 64 hands, but definitely not all of them.

I like to use 4♦ and 4♥ as transfers here, showing 6-4. i.e. Delayed Texas. Without these agreements, 4M is to play, I can go through smolen with a Slam Try...
Yay for the "Ignored Users" feature!

You can play delayed Texas after Smolen:
2N - 3♣ - 3♦ - 3♠ - 3N - 4♦
Of course, that creates a problem with a 4=5=4=0 shape, but..
You can play transfers here too:
4♣ = 4=5=4=0;
4♦/4♥ = delayed texas
4♣ = 4=5=0=4
I'm still thinking that my gadget can work. Stay tuned.

Here's what my partner and I play:
2NT - 3♣
3♦ - 3M
3NT - __
4♣ = 6/4 Mild Slam Try or better
4♦ = 6/4 Sign Off
4M = 5440 (with respectivce minors) quantitative or better
Edit: Forgot to add the rest.
2NT - 3♣
3♦ - 4♥/4♠
We play 4♥/4♠ to show 4♣/4♦, quantitative or better for those 4M4m hands.

What I was thinking about was using 2N - 3♣ - 3♦ - 4M as a quantitative raise with 4 cards in the corresponding minor. 4N over 3♦ would imply a 4M333.
LOL; just read Andy's edit.
