Beta version of Windows 7 has been already published. I think,it would be interesting to have a thread in which forums members (many of them have considerable knowledge in this field) will advise in the future about their opinions, experiences with this operating system.

WinSupersite has an extensive review:

http://www.winsupers...in7/Default.asp

From personal experience, I think it will likely be very popular. Laptop users will rejoice at the enhanced battery life and it's seems more responsive in general (vis-a-vis Vista). And not to mention, they fixed the UAC ("Do you really want the program to do this?") prompts.

I'll respect your wishes to make this a Windows 7 thread but a recent "What the hell is this?" experience with Vista suggests that there might be a need there as well. I managed to cope with a little luck, but with no help from the Help.

I'll watch the thread with interest but I don't plan on using a beta version of windows unless I get paid for it.

Over the years (Dos thru Windows to XP.....Our new machine is coming this week with Vista....) my hundred or so uses of the "help" function (persistence in this case has never paid) has only led to more frustration.

The other day, I had a question on Youtube and used the help function and got my answer on the first try!

Perhaps having an online dictionary of all of the contents of windows is not only ridiculous but inefficient and frustrating. New search techniques and references to other searches and question/answers seems to be the way to go.

M$ has always been slow on the uptake but that is the result of being so massive.

Oh, new version of Windows, that means Vista might actually be stable and good by now. I think I will stay with XP for a year or so to see how bad this one is first.

Sean

PS: And it will probably require 8GB+ of RAM to run at a decent speed; they of the code bloat :P

Office 2007 is cool so if the ideas spread to the operating system in general it would be fine. That said, I am not going to use any microsoft product except when my boss forces me to.

Since Vista sucked so much, it is possible that these new windows is the stable version after microsoft used his devoted customers to beta-test vista they now have a product.

What is this Windows of which you speak?

Seriously, I'm guessing we have Vista 1.1 coming out - and it might just work. That doesn't mean I'm going to install it any time soon - nor let it come preinstalled (i.e. pay for the thing).

i dont think they have opened up Windows 7 yet to public beta testing yet, they are still taking apps at microsoft connect, most of the versions on the net are leaked versions so far.

Yes, it's open to the public; from http://www.microsoft.../beta-faq.aspx:

Who can download the Windows 7 Beta?
The Beta is free and available to the first 2.5 million people who download it, starting January 9, 2009. However, because Microsoft isn’t providing technical support for the Beta, we strongly recommend that only experienced computer users sign up.

We're testing it here at work - so far we found it's more sleek than Vista.

Tempted to try this, but one should never install beta software on a computer that one needs badly everyday, and this is my situation with my laptop now.

Windows 7 is available now, any private experiences with it here in Forums?
There are prevailing very postive opinions in german specialist publications about working of W7 in their testing procedures.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I've had zero problems with Vista. I've had it crash once, when I tried to use the incorrect driver with old hardware to see if I could get it to work. That was obviously my own fault. It annoys me that the old style help files don't work in Vista. Other than that... It's been perfect.

I will say it's almost never a good idea to install a new OS on an old machine -- Better to wait until you get a new one.

Vista was shipped with my laptop and I thought it would be better not to mess with it. It works fine but maybe only because it's got good hardware and I don't do much on it :D
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

I have read about some tests with W7 and older PC's. They run it without any problems even on an "old" 1GHz machines, various older lap tops, etc...

Vista was so bad that it made me (a lifelong PC user) switch to a Mac. The PCs i still use i try to have XP on, but I my mac. Anyway, my parents are going to get a new laptop and I somewhat advised them to wait till 7 comes out. hope it works better than the bloatware microsoft shipped last.
