I'm going to play in slam. I don't know how to show spades and diamonds (what's the difference between 5NT and 6C?) so I'll just bid 5NT and pass 6D if partner bids that.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Yes, me too.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Let me add to the uncertainty... what is the difference between 5♣ and then bidding a slam (raise diamonds, jump to spades over hearts) and either 5N or 6♣?

Ordinarily, we have issues after the opps bid to the 5=level... say RHO had bid 5♣... I would then take 5N and 6♣ as pick a slam, but 6♣ promising 1st round club control, thus allowing, on rare occasions, for grand.... I've never seen any better idea, even tho this idea will rarely arise or help when it does....

BTW, I agree with 5N here.. if only because I wouldn't want partner thinking that 5♣ then slam was a grand slam try

Yes I think partner would often take 5C followed by a raise as a try for a grand slam. It depends a bit on how it goes. For example, if partner bids 5D and we raise to 6, he should think we were planning to play in game but diamonds was unexpected good news.

There is another problem with 5C and that is that we have no good bid over 5H. Well true, I guess we'd have to jump to 6S.

I would bid 5NT. 5♣ then 5NT sounds to me like the same thing but with first round club control. I would not be shocked to find partner disagreeing with me on that, which is even more reason to avoid it.

I'd genuinely appreciate some enlightenment. Absent some detailed discussion, I'd bid this hand like maggieb. What exactly does 5NT show on this auction? What do we do with a more or less balanced biggish hand which contains something like KQ10♣, and we'd like P to bid slam with a max? This one's got me confused, so thanks for any help. B)
