Scoring: IMP

(ps)-1-(1N)-2
(2)-3-(3)-ps
(ps)-4-(ps)-ps
(4)-AP

1, with south's hand, do you prefer 5D?
2, south bid 3 times and pushed opps to 4, is it normal action?

Hi,

Simply speaking, if you dont know, what you do over 4S
dont bid 4D.
As it is, I would have passed 3S, 3D showed your hand.

More generally, if you never try to defend with 4 in a minor
over their partial, you will be more often right than wrong.

With kind regards

The South hand has a lot of worthless honors strength. Assuming that the 1NT overcall requires something like 15-18 HCP, North and East are left with less than 10 HCP.
It seems quite obvious that North and East share only 3.
(Why didn't North support if he has 2 of them?
On what distribution would East rise to 4?)
It seems likely that North and West hold a long major with 6-8 cards and a similar distribution pattern like South's 8221.

I think 3 is not the bid that is required here. Reevaluating the South hand, should reveal that has only 10 working HCP and 5 loser (and only 1 defense trick and it's not sure to make this A). It should also be obvious to South that North 2 bid was made on distribution and not on HCP strength.
So South should have bid a preemptive 4 to keep West from showing support to or even better pass 2 hoping that opps don't bid game.

Forcing opps into a 4M contract that has chances to be made on distribution makes very little sense.
