Anyway, you know that it is not your day when a bad team thrashes you.... 20-0 in VPs.
One big swing was a screwup by us, and the other 2 were the ones that caused us to feel sorry for ourselves.
1. You hold KQ42 KQ72 10x A109. Partner opens 1N, 15-17 and responds 2♦ to your stayman enquiry.
You launch into G****r, and find out that your side possesses all the Aces, so bid a confident 6N. They lead the ♦K... how do you like your chances?
Well, partner has Axx Axx Axx KJxx. Still like them?
Both majors split 3-3, so that gives you 11 tricks, and you need to guess the clubs. Both opps pitch diamonds on the 4th majors, and it looks as if they are 3=3=4=3. This is a 5 or 7 hand, so maybe I should be happy they missed the grand. Needless to say, our ladies did not bid slam.
2. You hold 1=3=3=6 with AJxxxx in clubs and nothing else. LHO opens 1N, 15-17, and rho bids 3♠, natural and forcing and then, over 4♠, bids 4N then 6♠.
You lead the club Ace and see Kxx QJx AQx KQxx.
Playing udca, partner plays the 2, so you can't tell who has the stiff. Trust me, these players WOULD keycard with xx in clubs and lots of high card points.
Since declarer is marked with the heart Ace, the only hope is that partner has a stiff club.
Wrong: declarer established that he was off 2 keycards and then bid slam anyway.... partner could have saved you by doubling 5♥ on her A222, but even then you might assume she was showing the King. Declarer was AQxxxxx Kxx Kx x.
I'm not looking for sympathy.. I just needed to moan publicly
