I certainly could have added "when we have a long relay auction" but I didn't think of it.

It's not that I feel good about having a relay auction. Specifically I feel good that the play affects my choice in the bidding.

So I picked when partner opens 1NT, because I feel like I have very good judgement in this situation and I'm convinced that I play better methods over 1NT than the vast majority of bridge players. Plus I trust partner's play too.
Usually when partner opens with a preempt, I'm terrified.

Five-over-five stuff is good too, as are systemic gains. I almost had my perfect auction the other day -
2NT (P) 4H (4S)
5H (5S) AP
2NT showed 5-5 in hearts and a minor, weak. The 5H bid was based on a 0562 (maybe this should systemically double, but it was undiscussed). Unfortunately, the opponents had done the right thing

I added "when you have to make a tough 5 over 5 decision" as a joke, just as the fourth suit forcing auction.

Have you seen his preempts? No reason to be terrified.
I don't know what partner he's talking about, though.
